{Family: Ranunculaceae} This genus is made up of over 300 species of perennials, and they are known for their fluffy, showy flowers. The branches of their slender stems often intertwine. The flowers have no true petals, but have 4 or 5 sepals and conspicuous tufts of stamens giving them their fluffy appearance.

These plants are frost-hardy, and grow in sun or partial shade in any type of well-drained soil. Propagate from fresh seed in autumn or by division in spring (note that they may be slow to recover after division).

The Thalictrums have been grown in English gardens for four or five centuries. Some species were known as ‘Spanish Tufts’ or ‘Tufted Columbines’. In the Roman times, it was believed that to lay a new-born child on a pillow stuffed with thalictrum flowers would ensure it riches throughout life. The name means ‘to flourish or look green, being full of leaves’. The common name 'Meadow Rue' is a reference to the rue-like blue-green foliage.
